6 steps for becoming environmentally aware

“Learning about Forests (LEAF)” is a program supported by EuroLife. Its aim is to give the opportunity to Cypriot students to acquire and expand their environmental awareness.

The program aims to promote knowledge and strengthen action on forests and their benefits. It examines everything that forests offer to humans, starting from offering food and clean water to jobs.

Through the program’s six pillars, students begin to understand not only the beneficial influence of forest environments –and especially forests themselves– but also to act in their everyday life in an environmentally sustainable way by preserving the ecosystem for the next generations.

Let’s look at the 6 steps towards environmental awareness:

  1. 1.       We learn to enjoy nature

We develop our curiosity about nature’s processes and human interaction. We reconnect with nature and acquire a sense of ownership of our natural environment, thus rejuvenating our admiration of forests and reminding ourselves of the importance the environment has in our lives.

  1. 2.       We sense and observe nature

We get to know the ecosystems and species of flora and fauna. Practical learning educates us on all aspects of forest environment, and encourages us to understand and take a closer look at the environment.

  1. 3.       We perceive the ecological web

We know and understand the different forest species. We learn about biodiversity and how it can be protected.

  1. 4.       We understand the interaction between humans and nature

Learning about forests inspires students to appreciate all the wonderful things that forests do for us, from the wood we use to the oxygen we breathe. We also understand the potential conflicts of interest.

  1. 5.       We decide on environmental issues

We ask useful questions to gather good information and form a true view. We discuss issues in order to understand them and think about possible solutions.

  1. 6.       We are responsible for the future

We work on issues of responsibility, and acquire knowledge and behaviors that will turn us into responsible consumers. We make our choices for a more sustainable society.
